This position is being announced under the Pathways Student Internship Program. This Program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions with opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school and while getting paid for the work performed. Duties

Help

  • Receive a variety of incoming mail and arrange by subject; review outgoing correspondendence.
  • Maintain electronic and/or hard copy office files. Perform filing duties by sorting and arranging materials to be filed in alphabetic, numerical, or chronological order as prescribed by available guidelines. Retrieve data or documents from files upon request.
  • Compile data to provide assistance on projects and special requests. Create reports, charts, etc.
  • Utilize programs such as Microsoft Powerpoint, Excel and Word or other office productivity software to create, copy, edit, store, send, and print a variety of standardized documents.

If selected, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Sign an agreement between GSA, the student and educational institution that will identify agreed-upon schedule of school and work to ensure work responsibilities do not interfere with academic performance.
  • Serve in a probationary/trial period for the entire duration of the internship appointment.
  • Current or Former Political Appointees: The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule C or Non-Career SES employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the HR Office. Failure to disclose this information could result in disciplinary action including removal from Federal Service.
  • Complete a "Declaration of Federal Employment" (OF-306) to determine suitability for Federal employment.
  • Undergo a background investigation and receive a favorable adjudication.
  • Non-GSA employees must complete the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Form I-9 to determine identity and employment (work status) eligibility. GSA will verify the information through the DHS e-Verify automated system. Any identified discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of continued employment.

Qualifications

NOTE: Qualifications are based on length and level of experience. Therefore, in addition to describing duties performed, applicants must provide the exact dates of each period of employment (from month/year to month/year) and the number of hours per week if part time. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, and other national service alumni are encouraged to apply.

The salary range differs based on location. Salary ranges can be viewed here. Generally, first time appointees to Federal civilian service have their salary set at the beginning rate of the grade for which they are selected; unless prior approval has been received to adjust the salary based on superior qualifications of the applicant.

You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements by May 30, 2017. To qualify, you must demonstrate the following:

At the GS-3: Completion of one full academic year of post-high school study OR six months of progressively responsible clerical, office or other experience which indicates an ability to acquire the particular knowledgde and skills needed to perform the duties of the clerical position to be filled OR a combination of education and experience. NOTE: One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours/45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university program.

At the GS-4: Completion of two full academic years of post-high-school study OR an associate's degree OR one year of clerical, office or other experience which indicates an ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the clerical position to be filled OR a combination of education and experience.

Education

Qualifying educational institutions/programs for Pathways include: a high school/GED whose curriculum has been approved by a state or local governing body, or a home-school curriculum; and any accredited technical or vocational school, 2- or 4-year college or university, a graduate or professional school, or a post-secondary home-school curriculum.

A post-secondary certificate program must have been completed at a qualifying educational institution equivalent to at least 1 academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum.

Education completed outside of the United States must be deemed equivalent to that gained in conventional/accredited U.S. education programs to be acceptable for Federal employment. If you received a degree abroad, contact the agency to which you are applying for guidance regarding having your degree reviewed by a U.S.-based credential evaluation service.
